Ep 4: Doctor Lester Davids’ Pitch Profile
Name: Doctor Lester Davids
Company: SkinCross
Industry: Medical research
Product: Harvested skin
Equity for cash: R2.5 million for 15%
Pitch:
Innovation: Previous studies concerning the healing of burn wounds have used different treatment regimes to enhance healing. These include autologous skin grafts where a sample of normal, unaffected skin is expanded in theatre and placed on the wound site. Recently, with the advent of more advanced tissue culture techniques coupled with optimisation of tissue culture conditions for skin cells, options have arisen to expand both autologously obtained keratinocytes and melanocytes. The major obstacle has been that these two cell types grow at different rates, require different growth media and affect each other through the release of cytokines.
On the basis of this, SkinCross hereby proposes in this study to innovatively harvest normal skin cells and besides attempting to profile these cells with respect to co-culture conditions and characteristics such as their cell growth/proliferation and migration in an in vitro model; expand them in the laboratory and re-apply them to the wound bed as an autologous epidermal skin. This will ultimately lower the cost of burn treatment and speed up the skin harvesting process.

5 Books Every Entrepreneur Should Read
As we draw closer to the big December break, book our holiday destinations, wind down at work and plan lazy afternoons by the pool, the ritual of slipping into a book store for a good holiday read is all part of the ‘switching off’ process.
However if you have big plans for your business next year and are looking for inspiration, why not put that crime novel on the back burner and get inspired by these great reads every entrepreneur should have on their shelf, well-read and dog-eared.
1. Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook by Gary Vaynerchuk. A must read! A bestseller on how to connect with customers and kick the competition to the curb. The social media expert demystifies the social media landscape and outlines working strategies, including six rules for storytelling on social media platforms.
2. Outliers by Malcom Gladwell. You may have heard of this one. Think of all the greats, like Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerburg, snipers in the world of entrepreneurship. Malcom breaks down the logic of these business legends and it’s not just great genes and a high IQ.
3. 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. Whether you’re in college, just starting a business or managing a team, this book is a must read. It was first published in 1990 and is still a number-one bestseller, having sold over 15 million copies. This will definitely be our first choice on the plane down to the coast.
December holidays are time for reflection, so use this time wisely, it’s the gift of space to be creative and plan for a new year ahead. Happy reading!

In July, four brand new Lokshin Bioskop movies are coming to Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161) and will be screened every Saturday at 19:00.
First up is THE CONTRACT (July 4) starring Dambuza Nqumashe, Bongiwe Lunga and Thandeka Mdeliswa. The movie follows Bra V, a man who has put out a ‘contract’ on himself. Then, on the eve of his death during his band’s reunion concert, he unexpectedly rediscovers the will to live when a young singer jumps onto stage during the performance. Now, with the killers in the crowd, Bra V must find an exit clause to stay alive.

In this fascinating courtroom drama, a man pleads guilty to the shooting of another but argues that it was not murder since the victim planned the entire scheme including providing the weapon that killed him.Now the jury must decide whether there is such a thing as “murder by consent.”
The following week, on July 18, make a date to see SUGAR AND SPICE which features the talents of Masego Jacobs, Khanyie Langa and Refilwe Mofokeng. Set in Alexandra, the movie revolves around three underprivileged young girls who are all high school dropouts. They begin to date wealthy older men who give them lavish lives but there’s a surprise in store for the trio.
And rounding off the month, viewers can see Dineo Nchabeleng, Lebohang Inno and Lizwi Vilakazi in THE PORTRAITS (July 25). In the movie, Papi is released from a 5-year prison stint after being acquitted of all charges in a rape case. His return home puts the lives of his family and friends to the ultimate test as they must all come to terms with the past and what lies ahead.

Finding love the “traditional” way is fast becoming something that’s not as common as it used to be. With the advancement of technology and having the world literally at one’s fingertips, its not uncommon for people to find the love of their life online.
Wiz Khalifa & Amber Rose
Even though their nasty divorce is all their names are associated with now, their initial couple-dom was precious.
According to Amber, “”Initially we met through twitter” Rose explained to Us. “He did an interview about me and the guy who interviewed him asked, ‘If there was one girl in the world who would you be with?’ He said ‘Amber Rose.’ And then I hit him [up] on Twitter, and I said, ‘That’s really cute’ and we fell in love!”
Big Sean & Naya Rivera
Even though their relationship was behind one of the nastiest diss songs in history, Naya and Big Sean were once deliriously in love, and they met on Twitter.
She said, “I had followed him and he sent me a little message, like, ‘I’m a fan.’ I tweeted that I followed him, I was trying to get his attention. We went to dinner and the rest is history.”
Evelyon Lozada and Chad Johnson
Evelyn Lozada’s fiery temper helped her stand out from the rest of the “Basketball Wives” but football player Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson wasn’t deterred by her attitude. In fact, the former Cincinnati Bengals star was so intrigued by what he saw on television that he contacted Lozada via twitter. The two were soon flirting with each other online and in no time they were love. Lozada and Johnson rushed down the aisle to holy matrimony but just a month after their fairytale wedding in St. Maarten, Lozada found incriminating evidence that her new husband was unfaithful already.
Keyshia Cole and Daniel Gibson
NBA baller Daniel “Boobie” Gibson saw Keyshia Cole on television and he knew he wanted to be with her. So what did he do? The Cleveland Cavaliers player first caught Cole’s attention using twitter. In no time, he swept the R&B singer off of her feet. He asked the “I Changed My Mind” singer to marry him at the top of 2010 and that same year she gave birth to their son. Gibson and Cole married the following year and then renewed their vows a few months
